The monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat, in the province of Barcelona, at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level. The image of the Virgin of Montserrat, popularly called La Moreneta because of the dark color of her skin, is a 12th century polychrome Romanesque carving of great beauty. In 1881, the Virgin of Montserrat was proclaimed Patron Saint of Catalonia by Pope Leo XIII.
Since 1947 she has been enthroned on a silver altarpiece, paid for by popular subscription, in the upper part of the apse of the basilica.
The Alto Panadés is one of the four counties into which Panadés was divided in the 1987 regional division of Catalonia.
