The monastery of Santa Maria de Montserrat is a Benedictine abbey located on the mountain of Montserrat, in the province of Barcelona, at an altitude of 720 meters above sea level. The image of the Virgin of Montserrat, popularly called La Moreneta because of the dark color of her skin, is a 12th century polychrome Romanesque carving of great beauty. In 1881, the Virgin of Montserrat was proclaimed Patron Saint of Catalonia by Pope Leo XIII. Since 1947 she has been enthroned on a silver altarpiece, paid for by popular subscription, in the upper part of the apse of the basilica.
Visit Sitges is a coastal town in Catalonia, southwest of Barcelona, surrounded by the mountainous Garraf natural park. The colorful old town and surrounding streets are lined with stores, restaurants and many gay-friendly bars and nightclubs. The Maricel Museum and the Cau Ferrat Museum exhibit works of Catalan art and art from other parts of Spain.
